Creating Storage Where There Is None

How important is storage to home buyers?

Pretty important, we’d say!

A report released by the National Association of Home Builders found that 92 per cent of buyers were looking for a laundry room while another 81 per cent were after garage space. Decoded, these two places are optimal storage areas. But you probably don’t need a stat to tell you that! You need a place to put your things and hide the clutter – because what’s worse than running out of closet space or realising your junk drawer is too small?

If storage is so important to home buyers, however, why not make your own? These days, there are so many creative – and not to mention stylish – ways to incorporate storage into your home if you need it. Let’s take a look at how you can create storage space where there is none!

Take to the walls

Going vertical kills two birds with one stone. You get extra storage space for one, and you can create unique decor as well. If there’s a wall that you’re having trouble deciding what to decorate with, put some shelves up and style them as you see fit. Perhaps it’s a family gallery, or a studious library or even just a place to put all your nick nacks. Shelves are great if you don’t have a lot of space, as they leave room for more furniture.

Shelving can be both functional and stylish.

Use storage bins

We’re after those chic wicker baskets or cloth bins that are as practical as they are stylish.

We aren’t talking about those clunky plastic bins that seemed to be the only option for a while – we’re after those chic wicker baskets or cloth bins that are as practical as they are stylish. Both make for great decor and can go anywhere in your home. Store everything from extra blankets to out-of-season clothing that is taking up closet space. Some baskets can be used as decoration in your home and can even double as a couch end or coffee table.

Hang things inside doors

Double your closet space by putting shelving or hooks on the inside of what closet doors you already have. Hooks make extra space for bulky coats that might take up too much space next to your normal clothes. If you’re running out of space in your kitchen, fit the cabinets with shelves not just for more storage, but for more organisation as well.
